What We Treat > The Shoulder
Shoulders

The shoulder is the loosest joint in the body. It requires great range of motion with a degree of stability for normal functional activities.

The ligaments, muscles and tendons around the shoulder play an important role to stabilize and control purposeful movement through a complex series of biomechanical inter-related movements of the shoulder blade and collar bone.

Signs and symptoms of the shoulder include; pain, catching, weakness, dead-arm feeling, pins and needles, numbness, grinding and stiffness.

These signs and symptoms can also originate from the cervical spine. This must be carefully investigated with a complete physical therapy assessment to arrive at the correct cause.

Diagnosis is your doctor's responsibility. Assessment and correct treatment is your physical therapist's responsibility.

Many diagnoses are assessed and treatable, including:

  • Tendinitis
  • Bursitis-subacromial bursitis
  • Rotator cuff tears/rupture
  • Biceps tears/rupture
  • Arthritis
  • Frozen shoulder/capsulitis
  • Post surgical arthroscopy/shoulder replacement
  • Dislocation/instability
  • Subluxation
  • Impingement
  • Nerve entrapment

Treatment and a specialized home exercise program will be prescribed and instructed.

You have the right to see any physical therapist. A referral to Duffy & Bracken Physical Therapy can be obtained from your doctor. Please advise your doctor of our services.

Shoulder

Did You Know?

Your shoulders belong on the sides of your body like your ears. Forward work such as computer or desk work tends to cause forward shoulders. To reverse this you need to focus your work-out on exercises that pull your shoulder blades backward, working the muscles that pull the shoulders back. You don't have to go to a gym to do these type of exercises. There are simple exercises that you can learn to do at home and remember to keep your shoulders back while sitting and working.
