What We Treat > Runner's Pain Therapy

Running is a very common activity and sport but requires specialized care.

Runners are unique in that they come in different physiques and have different goals.

Some are weekend joggers, others are sprinting specialists, middle distance racers, marathoners, or multi-sport specialists. Each have a different requirement.

Runners can have signs and symptoms in all regions of the body, but more commonly in the lower extremity.

Some diagnoses that doctors provide, include:

  • Iliotibial band syndrome
  • Meniscal injuries (cartilage problems)
  • Patello-femoral dysfunction (chondromalacia patellae, patello-femoral syndrome)
  • Sprained ankle.
  • ACL and ligament reconstruction
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Neuroma
  • Shin splints
  • Trochanteric bursitis
  • Achilles, trochanteric, patella tendonitis
  • Strained or pulled groin
  • Hamstring strains/tears

Runners have reported signs and symptoms in the feet, ankles, shins, knees, thighs, hips, groin, buttock and low back.

Our physical therapy assessment consists of diagnostic procedures to screen out other causes of signs and symptoms.

Our aim is to first identify the cause of your signs and symptoms. To do that, we may need to perform biomechanical analysis as well as standard orthopedic procedures. Orthopedic and musculo-skeletal techniques are used to help relieve and heal injured tissues.

Deformities of the feet can contribute to the runner's signs and symptoms. We will refer you, if necessary, to a physician and podiatrist specialists for orthotic devices and supports to correct biomechanical deficiencies. Taping is also used to limit or facilitate a desired function.

Once strength and proprioception (balance) has improved, we apply our knowledge in motor skill acquisition and learning to re-teach your specific deficit. This may include a desired running style and technique. Aerobic and anaerobic considerations are included into your regimen.

Proper assessment and treatment requires specialist physical therapist services. Your doctor can provide you with a prescription for our specialized services.
